A relay acts as an intermediary between servers that use the ActivityPub protocol. Servers can subscribe to a relay to publish all public posts to it and, in turn, receive all public posts that other subscribed servers publish.
New and smaller servers that are not well connected within the Fediverse can use a relay to increase the number of posts in the federated timeline and improve hashtag results. On the other hand, your server will require more storage and compute resources. Using a relay is optional.
Registration is open.
You should be able to use relay.toot.io with any ActivityPub-compatible software.
Below are instructions for some popular software.
Please note that ActivityPub relays are configured by server/instance administrators.
If you are a regular user, please contact your instance administrator if you would like your server to
use this relay.
We normally auto-accept all incoming federation requests. There is no need to write us an email or a Mastodon post to get started. Add our relay to your instance and wait for it to connect automatically. After a few minutes you should see your instance in the list of connected instances below.
